Along the horizontal axis, we can plot either temperature or spectral type (also sometimes called spectral class). Several of the brightest stars are identified by name. Most stars fall on the main sequence. Such a plot is frequently called the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, abbreviated H–R diagram.
The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (or HR diagram) is constructed in logarithmic coordinates. In this graphic construction, each star is a point marked on the ordinate by its brightness (luminosity or absolute magnitude) and on the abscissa by its spectral type (or surface temperature).
